We were never supposed to rely on a single score, but often, it is the case. Measures such as ORF and spelling screeners are quick and easy to administer and provide a reliable temperature check that can show where further investigation is warranted. We’re letting too many children fall through the cracks.
Thank you this mirror's my and my daughters journey high stens but high effort. I got diagnosed dyslexic at 40 and she did at 12. You can spent a lot of time thinking your fake when all around think you have it together because of your high ability in tests but often they don't see the fear, anxiety and amount of effort that it takes to get there. Stens are only a very small part of the overall picture and I've seen them too often being used solely as a way of deciding who gets support. To be fair though schools are stretched in SET so while it's wrong it's understandable to an extend. Also you have a one in four chance or getting the answer right if you guess so they aren't accurate for all.
Oh my goodness, Jen! This story is so valuable for all of us, especially those in the literacy field who may fall into the trap of making ‘sanitised’ decisions based on data that we assume is answering the questions we have in mind.
